Why Open edX ?

In the following Open edX technical feature list, we would like to introduce the e-learning solution Open edX by providing you with a detailed table comprising its main technical features. Abstract Technology is an official ser-vice provider of Open edX and we have been working with the platform since it was initially released as an Open Source solution, through which we are able to offer a future proof e-learning solution for employee training as well as for online learning in schools and universities. We have been convinced of its immense potential from the beginning and believe that Open edX will continue playing a major role in the world of online learning!

Feature list


Open edX can be deployed on a single server or on cloud platforms. Its architecture is modulear and easy scalable, since it was initially designed as a MOOC platform. It is split in different components, which can be distributed on different machines and which size can be tailored and scaled to fit a growing user base.
OLX (Open Learning XML) – is the edX specific version of XML (eXtensible Markup Language). It allows to export/import courses from different Open edX instances or to write courses without using the Open edX course authoring tool (Open edX Studio).
Open edX features a set of REST APIs for integration with external services:
● Course API: Used to obtain information about edX courses
● Enrollment API: Used to view user and course enrollment information and to enroll a user in a course
● User API: Used to view and update account and preference information
● Open edX Data Analytics API: Used to view and analyze student activity in courses. This is the source of data for the Analytics Dashboard (Open edX Insights)
Every part of the platform is extensible and themable. It is very easy to change basic components like the logo, main image and welcome message. However, more customization requires de-veloping custom templates and static files requiring an in depth knowledge of the edX Platform source code.
Open edX offers a set of downloadable CSV reports for all courses available for instructors: Grade reports, Enrollments reports, Learners profile information reports, Issued certificates re-ports, Problem responses reports.
Open edX provides an analytics tool, called Open edX Insights. Open edX Insights offers infor-mation about courses to course team members, who have a Staff or Admin role. It provides these course team members with data about learners activity, background, and performance throughout the course. Using Open edX Insights can help you monitor the learners’ progress and validate the choices you made in designing your course. It can also help you re-evaluating choices and inform efforts to improve your course and the experience of your learners.
A single Open edX Platform can map to multiple subdomains, each with its own course catalog, ecommerce, theme, SSO and feature configuration.
Open edX is almost fully translated in Arabic, Spanish and Vietnamese. There are 72 transifex projects open with various levels of completion (Transifex).
Open edX courses are composed hierarchically consisting of pieces called XBlocks. XBlocks can represent components as small as a paragraph of text, a video, or a multiple-choice input field, or as large as a section, a chapter, or an entire course (List of xBlocks).
Open edX efforts are towards a responsive web application. It also features a supporting open source mobile application for iOs and Android.
